Monday, Feb 20, 2012
Prime Minister Najib Mikati Monday tackled domestic environmental affairs during his meeting with Minister Nazem Khoury in presence of head of Reconstruction and Development head Nabil Al-Jeser.
Conferees engaged in talks about the Litani River and Qaraoun dam pollution as well as the Sidon and Tripoli trash waste crises.
They agreed on setting a practical plan for funding sources.
At another level, the Rotary International President Kalan Banerjee also visited PM Mikati and discussed with him the club's program for scholarships.
After the meeting Mr. Banerjee said that the Rotary International and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) - the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - have worked to wipe polio from the face of the earth. A volunteer service organization of 1.2 million men and women, Rotary began immunizing children against polio in 1985 and became a spearheading partner in the GPEI three years later.
He added that Rotary's main responsibilities are fundraising, advocacy, and volunteer recruitment. To date, Rotary has contributed more than US$900 million to the polio eradication effort.
PM Mikati also met with the EU Ambassador to Lebanon Angelina Eichhorst, received a delegation of the Army command, and convened with the Chairman of the audit bureau Judge Awni Ramadan.
